Causes of terrorism?
-In the discipline of Political Science, terrorism is usually treated as having social-level
causes
-Rather than as something that can be reduced to individual psycho-pathology
A question of root causes:
What about Culture?
-One of the most influential (and most problematic) accounts of the impact of culture
on world politics was written by Samuel Huntington
-Huntington argued in The Clash of Civilizations that world conflict is moving in a new
direction
-One where cultural clash will become more and more significant
His argument starts with an overview of the changing nature of global conflict
across the modern era:
1. War of Princes
-From the Peace of Westphalia (1648) until the French revolution
-Consulting authority
2. War of Peoples
-From the French Revolution until World War I
3. War of Ideologies
-Beginning with the Russian Revolution (1917) and lasting until the end of the Cold
War
