What does democracy mean?
o Direct democracy (everyone has a direct say)
o Indirect (intermediating layer between you and the law maker)
Athens had woman, slaves, and poor not consulted with politics.
o Checks and balances were made to prevent majority tyranny
Limitations and barriers of our democracy
Where majority has the say, no prior 20 century democracy because people
excluded from democracy
Our democracy is restrictive
“We hold these truths to be self evident… we are all equal.”
o Blacks not given franchise (the right to vote)
o All people are not treated equal
o Woman excluded
Ex. Great Britain democracy had franchise limitations
o Only 3% could vote
o Then 25%
o Not until 1928
o Woman couldn’t vote
o Mentally disabled couldn’t vote
A lot of people were excluded from voting
o Why now are we extending our franchise?
o Strikes/wars lead to democracy
Ex. King John signed the Magna Carta because of the war and
Germany and Japan have democracy due to the consequence of
Democracy is reached through violence rather than consensus, debate etc.
Is democracy forced upon people?
Example of democracy being peacefully implemented
o Egypt’s regime, protests enough for peaceful democratic revolution
o Created function democracy
Still restrictive in the pres nt?
o What is limiting our democracy
o How much influence do people actually have?
To influence political process is limited.
