Of particular interest for their transmission belt role: Educate people about political life/define what electoral politics are about. How have these canadian parties played these roles: cadre/brokerage parties. Aggregation: brokerage politics: elite accommodation>try to suppress the expression of cleavages. Education: politics is about finding ways to accommodate regional, ethnic and language differences. Leader focused> which leader is able to achieve national unity. Other identities are generally not centered in political discussion. Results: politics of elite accommodation rather than of ideological division. The public is not educated to develop longer-lasting ideas about appropriate polices; volatile voters. Look at the 2015 federal election, the majority of the voting discussion was centered around the personalities of the candidates rather than the policies being put in place. This form of politics is limited, and more focused on ideologies: mass parties/ideological parties. ^sees itself as an alternative to the brokerage party.
