Conflict between philosophy and the demands of politics. Philosophy and politics have trouble combining themselves. Philos (love) sophie (goddess of wisdom) = love of wisdom/knowledge. Socrates is the central figure in the republic and many other of plato"s works. Oracle of delphi claims socrates as the wisest of men. Socrates was charged by not recognizing the gods (questioning their knowledge) Was also corrupting the youth of athens (make them question as well) 2nd socrates is the one in the republic (different from the 1st historical socrates) Dialogue consists of people arguing about the definition of justice. Two forms of communication in the republic (grammatical and philosophical) What is right for society/people to be and do (justice) Conventional views of justice (in athens at the time) are discussed and mainly argued by socrates. Socrates plays a major role by trying to find problems/weaknesses in all of their views in front of an audience.
