Jan 20  Movie from Thursday – Stelco strike  Deindustrialization ­ manufacturing employment in Ontario ’76­’08 graph  ­ dropoff in 80s and 90s recession  ­ another significant drop after 2008  ­ trade balance – we import 100billion dollars worth of goods than we export o mining and we are shipping oil and gas to pay for this (other factors too of  course)  ­ deindustrialization – we dig things out and sell it and we get rich … we have a lot  of valuable things on our land, so we are lucky ­  1990 – most countries are decreasing manufacturing, Canada is one of few  countries that was increasing, began decreasing early 2000s  ­ more productivity in system, so # of workers decreases  Productivity – declining # of employees, with increased productivity  ­ but even w our productivity employment levels are still decent  ­ manufacturing goods – productivity increases and price goes down – GDP looks  like its shrinking, even if producing same # of things  ­ ex. VCR – used to be $600,
