Gendered lens helps to understand covert protesting. Phases that lead to replacement of authoritarian rule by a system of rule based on comparative electoral politics. Mobilization explicitly for women"s rights feminist movements; mobilization of women primarily, with some male allies. 1st wave: 1867-1960: suffrage, voting rights, temperance, pacifism, labour and health rights (access to jobs, employment security, appropriate health care) 2nd wave: 1960-1985: campaigns supporting peace and disarmament, equality in education and employment, birth control, end to violence against women. 3rd wave: 1985-present: tricky, greater recognition of diversity, idea that women should define their own womanhood: consequence: difficult for solidarity. 1st and 2nd waves: assumption of whiteness; no interest in diverse perspectives. Mainstream women"s groups largely took whiteness, class, and heterosexuality for granted indigenous and other racialized women worked within their own communities.
