POLSCI 3VV3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Majoritarianism, John Stuart Mill
Document Summary
Defence of the us constitution before it was passed, state by state. The real challenge of the federalist papers: the problem of an extended republic. The united states (even if it s just the thirteen colonies) is huge! If the polity is too large, it will become a tyranny (an empire) or it will fall apart, and readers of history and philosophy will know this. There can be majority or minority factions (88). Factions in rousseau are not the general will it would be 99% of the society, but it still won t be the general will. Political parties are a disaster for this reason. You can remove the causes of faction, or you can minimize its effects. Remove causes: hinder people so they can t express their own interests, or get everyone to agree. We can use the problem of faction to solve the problem of faction.
