Proportional representation, by contrast, is designed to accurately translate between votes cast and electoral outcomes. There are different types of proportional representation - but, in general: The proportion of the total vote that a party obtains is reflected in the proportion of total seats that a party receives. The system allows minority parties to achieve some form of political representation. Voters for minority parties will be translated into tangible electoral outcomes. It eases the concern that a vote will be wasted if it is not casted on behalf of one of the major parties. It expands the number of choices that are available. Several forms, including the list system (open or closed) Ties together first past the post and proportional representation. One for a local candidate to represent their local interests. The resulting parliament would be a combination of those elected from both methods. With the overall distribution of seates being proportional to each party"s share of the party vote.
