Week 2 : the state + introduction to governing institutions. A nation united under one government (you have a military, etc) Territory - ownership over a piece of land/control over an area. Bureaucracy - allows a state to provide services and goods to enhance its legitimacy. Sole authority of enforcing policies (has its own military, police, etc) Everybody in the state recognizes the sovereignty of the state and are not. Allows a government to give its people things like roads and social services, etc. Legitimized by their population in the case of a democratic states through. Recognized by outside states, not controlled by other nations trying to create their own state. Succession (quebec, catalonia) elections and collect revenue. Readings: chapter 5, p. 214-247 (readings for the next three classes) Refer to textbook: reflect on the truth and reconciliation report introduction. Cultural genocide and consolidating and enforcing state areas.
