This matters when you are doing field research too. If you"re sampling trump rallies - you cannot attend all of them so you have to pick a few that can be representative. Last class - probabilistic samples are the goal standard. Sampling is important in the response you put forward in your paper. Probabilistic samples: even if you technically do everything right there will always be a sample error. Type of sample you choose produces different sample errors. You are more able to estimate this error. Non-probabilistic samples have error cannot be estimated: larger sample is a better sample when everything else is equal (probabilistic samples) It is immaterial how large the sample is. Their sampling frame was based on lists (grew to 10 million) Landen was predicted to take 57% of vote but ended up with less than 40% What was true for the sample was not true for the masses.
