The gov preserves our individual rights to freedom etc : in a non-direct way, we choose our laws by choosing to obey them. We agree to a social contract by things like voting etc . It is not the govs job to tell us how to live our lives. What makes the gov/politics legitimate is not natural. It"s a re ection of our collective beliefs. They are subjective and particular to us. A di . in our norms and values. A di . way of understanding what our political institutions are supposed to do. Ancients didn"t live on rights, they lived on virtues. How can political institutions get us to live the right" way. Ancient greeks believed that wasting away your life watching shows etc believed it was unhealthy and does not allow them to live their most ful lled and best life and growth. We outlaw drugs, because we believe that drug addiction is a worst way to live.
