Women become a part of broader networks. Ross: different types of economic development; different consequences for gender relations and women in parliament. Dutch disease: oil economy tends to squeeze out manufacturing sector, but especially export oriented sector that rely heavily on female labour (textiles, clothing) Oil economy decrease female participation in labour force and drives up wages of men relative to women lower female political influence. Resources in the country rise, income of household (man working) goes up, household revenue high, don"t need a second income in family, country getting wealthier, redistributing resources, everyone doing well. Women feel less economic need, can choose not to work. Big picture: certain kind of economic development; ross"s economics when oil is involved. 2 types of analysis large end study: comparing cross nationally (167 countries: some with oil economies, worldwide analysis independent variable: testing effect of variation on 2 dependent variables (female labour force participation and female political participation)
