POLSCI 3V03 Lecture 7: Institutions
Document Summary
65% of women leaders in head of state positions are prime ministers, not presidentials. Limited brain power to absorb all information, in a situation with lack of knowledge or an overload we will try to simplify. We rely on social stereotypes and schemata to make quick decisions and judgments in the absence of information. Women viewed as more competent on domestic issues. Stereotype that women are more left wing, men are more right wing. Female candidates viewed as more liberal/left than they really are. Women, more than men, face a paradox as to how to present themselves in ways that correspond with gendered stereotypes. Dress, hairstyle, all subject to gender scrutiny. Other hand: too masculine = not nurturing, not feminine .
