Inventing a new form of political science how to understand democracy and how to use it. Whereas constant in abstract terms invents modern liberalism, Tocqueville develops these ideas in a much richer way. 1789: tocqueville s parents weren t killed by the revolution, but they were arrested and jailed. 1830: ideology is articulated by constant, an attempt to be liberal and mimic. Tocqueville is attempting to establish himself as one of the leading thinkers of the new establishment. Tocqueville, with de beaumont, goes on a year abroad (1831-2) to study the american prison system on a mandate from the french government.
