Muller (1826): we can never, its 6x faster than light. Helmholtz (1850): measured 90 ft per second on frog leg. A- simple reaction time (light comes on, push the button)- no categorization, no response selection. B- choice rt (light on the left, button on the left, light on the right and button on the right)- categorization and response selection. C- go/no-go (light on the left and right, do not push the button for the right) - categorization but no response selection. Stage theory of responding: one stage cannot start until the previous is complete, stimulus preprocessed, categorized, response selection, response execution. Pure insertion: adding a stage of processing (ex. Categorization) does not change the task, it is purely inserted: duration of that stage is the difference of reaction time. Problems with donders: withholding a response is actually a response, pure insertion is not possible, you are fundamentally changing the situation. Low validity condition- probability of being primed is low.
