PSYCH 1F03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Hermann Ebbinghaus, Nonsense Word, Long-Term Memory
Document Summary
Memory allows you to encode, store and retrieve information. Memory acts as a video camera which accurately preserves images and audio to be played back at a later time. Memory as a filing cabinet, we create memory files that are stored in a organized folder system which can be later accessed to remember something. Memory as a computer where specialized components are responsible for handling different memories at different times. Each assume that memory can store experiences in their original undistorted form and that memory retrieval is as simple as accessing a previously stored item that is kept in a specific place. Data: stored data is identical to inputted information, retrieved data is identical to inputted information. Memory: stored memory includes personal details and interpretations, retrieved memory may be altered or lost. Psychologists have generally asked three questions about memory: questions about memory acquisition and encoding, questions about memory storage, questions about memory retrieval.
