PSYCH 1F03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Classical Conditioning, Lightning
Document Summary
Conscious reflective learning is vital to the survival of a species: ex. a deer learns to avoid humans with metal sticks to avoid being shot. Two unconscious learning processes: classical conditioning = allows us to associate two related events, instrumental conditioning = allows us to associate actions and their consequences. Founder, 1890"s/1900"s (classical conditioning also called pavlovian conditioning to honour his contributions) Was interested in the stages of digestion. Dogs salivate before food arrives, focused great part of career focusing on this phenomenon. The presentation of one stimulus reliably leads to the presentation of another: ex. you see a flash of lightning before you hear the thunder, when you eat a strawberry you get an allergic reaction. When organism learns the association between a signal and event, contingent relationship has formed between the two stimuli"s. The learning of contingency between a particular signal and a late event that are paired in time and/or space.
