Psychology Classical Conditioning 1 Learning  Classical conditioning: associate two related events  Instrumental conditioning: associate actions and consequences Classical Conditioning (Pavlovian Conditioning)  Ivan Pavlov (late 1800s, early 1900s) started this theory  interested in the stages of digestion, which began with salivation in the mouth as food is first ingested  made an extraordinary observation: dogs would salivate before the delivery of food in their mouth  One of his famous experiments: a metronome signaled to a dog that food was about to be delivered. (metronome had no effect on dog before this) Following training, a dog would begin salivating in response of the sound of the metronome alone (=reflex conditioning)  technically Pavlov studied a contingent relationship: one stimulus leading to another  when an organism learns the association between a signal and event, there is a contingency that has formed between the two stimuli  Definition: the learning of a contingency between a particular signal and a later event that are paired up in time and/or space  learning these contingencies is the essence of classical conditioning so the organism can respond to the signal before the event occurs (can promote survival)  Classical conditioning in
