You (subject) and another subject (confederate) are told by the experimenter that the purpose of the study is to examine the effect of punishment on learning. You are designated as the teacher and the confederate is designated as the learner. The learner is connected to shock electrodes while you, the teacher watches quietly. During setup the learner mentions that he has a heart condition but the experiementer assures him that the shocks would do no permanent damage. The experiment explains that you are to read a list of word pairs to the learner who in turn must correctly respond with the second word in the pair. To improve performance, each time the learner gives an incorrect answer you will give him a shock, with each subsequent error, you will progressively give a higher shock along the control panel.
