Is a central question in the categorization of psychological disorders. Over the centuries (and between editions of the dsm), this concept has undergone dramatic shifts. What we think is a psychological disorder heavily influenced by cultural and social acception/ expectations. In ancient times: drilled into people"s skulls to release evil spirit", was apart of social, cultural and scientific perspectives of the time. Functional significance of disorder" is relative to context: In early life, individuals reach the top of the blue line (starting at adult hood) indicating highest peak of functioning. But as we start to ge, we normally lose functional capacity. But if we have a disorder (orange line), then this functional capacity degenerates sooner and also doesn"t get up as high when at its peak. Social contracts are involved in all human affairs, including our collective perceptinso of our own minds. Psychopathologies, from hysteria to depression, are not discovered but made": they are decided upon.
