PSYCH 1XX3 Lecture : Colour Perception
Document Summary
Introduction to colour perception: ability to see in different colours because objects/surfaces reflect certain wavelengths of visible spectrum, reflected wavelengths trigger specific patterns of response in brain that result in colour, colour is creation of mind, experience relates to how different wavelengths of light affect different cones in the retina, ultra violet rays have shorter wavelengths than visible light, visible light has shorter wavelengths than radio waves, colour adds to richness of visual experience. Primates have 3 types of cones in the eyes used for colour vision: distinguish red and yellow against a green background (helps with foraging food in bushes and trees, biological advantage is added contrast between objects and background, non mammalian species, birds, fish and insects able to see colours we don"t see colours at the uv end of the spectrum, birds colour of a potential"s mate"s feathers.
