Description
September 24 , 2012 Psych 2AP3: Abnormal Psychology – Major Disorders Disorders of Childhood and Adolescence: ADHD (3) What does prefrontal cortex do? - Prefrontal cortex: response inhibition and working memory - Corpus callosum - basal ganglia: response inhibition - cerebellum: attention, - behaviours can cause changes in brain structure, brain changes as a function of behaviour and thought Neurotransmitters - every single brain state is a mind state and can change these things without changing your brain chemistry - psychological manipulation, i.e. treatment for depression - many neurotransmitters: dopamine, serotonin, noradrenaline, gaba, acetylcholine, epinephrine, prolactin, oad, glucagon, nitric oxide, histamine, vasopressin, oxytocin, glutamate, melatonin, encephalin, nada, neurotensin… Neural Transmission - occurs at the synapse: connecting point between two neurons  presynaptic neuron: contains synaptic vesicles filled with neurotransmitters  synaptic cleft: neurotransmitters pass through to attain postsynaptic neuron  postsynaptic neuron: receptors in which molecules of neurotransmitters will fit  receptor sites change the structure of postsynaptic neuron, either aiding the transmission of the neurotransmitters or inhibiting the message - excitatory or inhibitory depends on receptors - in the synaptic cleft there is a chemical MAO that takes the neurotransmitters out of the receptor and recycles them back - auto receptor sites on presynaptic neuron: slowing down the production of neurotransmitter (negative feedback mechanism) - transporter proteins: brings neurotransmitters back through the membrane of the cell Levels of AD etiological analysis – neurochemistry - brain chemistry:  dopamine: active in the caudate nucleus, and the basis of the reward
