Description
November 26 , 2012 Psych 2B03: Theories of Personality Biological Bases of Personality (5) Oehlin & Nichols (1976) - studied 850 pairs of same-sex twins who took the NMST in 1962 - 514 MZ pairs: - 336 DZ pairs - 41% males/58%females - filled out personality and interest tests; parents completed questionnaire - CPI: modeled on a test for mental disorder called the MMPI (contains a large number of scales looking at pathological scales of psychology) but designed to look at normal aspects of personality - Overall estimate of heritability is somewhere between .5-.6 and higher for males than for females - Heritability coefficient for personality generically: .5, half of the variability of personality characteristics can be attributed to genetics - We have to be very careful about taking them for granted and for the truth - For most of these pairs the MZ correlation is significantly more than twice than the DZ correlation - Heritability correlation are overestimates - Not sure why there is a discrepancy between differences in the male and female data - Did estimate heritability coefficient between .4-.6 - Male data violated mathematical constraint therefor heritability coefficient are suspect -
