PSYCH 2B03 Lecture Notes - Heritability, Mental Disorder, Psych
Document Summary
Oehlin & nichols (1976) studied 850 pairs of same-sex twins who took the nmst in 1962. Overall estimate of heritability is somewhere between . 5-. 6 and higher for males than for females. Heritability coefficient for personality generically: . 5, half of the variability of personality characteristics can be attributed to genetics. We have to be very careful about taking them for granted and for the truth. For most of these pairs the mz correlation is significantly more than twice than the dz correlation. Not sure why there is a discrepancy between differences in the male and female data. Male data violated mathematical constraint therefor heritability coefficient are suspect. For females we do not have that problem but lower correlation in personality. Swedish adoption/twin study on aging (satsa) twins are much older twins reared apart and reared together: were able to use all the given formulas looking at personality traits. 2xdza: most below . 5, two are higher.
