Original id impulse removal of id"s dangerous impulse is displaced to something else for example original impulse: i love mom and we recathect that libido who symbolically stands in for mom two levels of displacement: Ego: we engage in behaviours that act as displacements of id impulses. Displacement of forbidden id impulse away from those objects. When we displace to an object that society values source of all value human culture: art, science, etc. Example: aggressive impulse towards dad, we don"t value aggressions against teachers, police officers, authorities figures, so we begin playing football in order to displace that aggressive impulse, it is valued in society. Unlike repression, sublimation and displacement do a lot of gratification that use up sexual libido, healthy defense mechanisms. Defend against the impulse by reversing the impulse. Attributing our won impulses to others can be combined with displacement.
