Document Summary

Stimulus projects on retina, gives a two dimensional representation of different colours and intensity of the lights. Rods: sensitive to very low levels of light. Cones: less sensitive than rods so need more light to operate. Acuity: enable you to see fine details. We perceive the world as object, but the visual stimulus our brain perceived does not consist of objects, therefore a lot of processing need to be done and assumptions are made by our perceptual system. Hubel & wiesel: specialized neurons within the brain, each of which has a different types of receptive field. Lights present at the centre: cell"s firing rate goes up. Lights present at the surrounding: cell"s firing rate goes down (opposite effect) Lights present at the edge (both centre and surrounding): no effect. Edge detector: cells fire at their maximum only when a stimulus containing an edge of just the right orientation appears within their perceptive fields.
