Schizophrenia - poor contact with reality; delusions start to occur (irrational/nonrealistic thoughts) Psychotic episode if all 3 positive symptoms occurred together. Symptoms of schizophrenia generally begin in late adolescence and early adulthood. According to a large scale study - schizophrenia occurs more often in males. In psychosis- assumption that large amounts of dopamine is released/present. Amphetamines and cocaine (both stimulators) have similar structure to dopamine. Abusers of these drugs, show symptoms of psychosis. Could be because these drugs are binding to same receptors that dopamine would bind to leading to similar symptoms. Or, the use of these drugs also increase amount of dopamine in brain leading to psychotic like symptoms. The first generation anti-psychotics had a lot of side effects. Dopamine also played a lot of other roles.
