PNB  2XC3   Week  1   Sept.  10,  2013   Animal:  An  organism  that  feeds  on  organic  matter,  typically  having  specialized  sense  organs   &  nervous  system  &  able  to   respond  rapidly  to  stimuli     3  Kingdoms  of  Multicellular  Organisms:  Animal,  plants,  &  fungi   3  Kingdoms  of  Unicellular  Organisms:  Bacteria  &  protists     Whooping  Crane  Video   • The  species  was  at  the  verge  of  extinction  (n=16  in  1945)   • Owing  to  conservation  efforts,  n=407  wild  birds  in  2012  (mostly  in  Canada)   • 2  aspects  of  learning:  chicks  imprint  on  caregiver,  young  learn  migration  route   from  adults   • Cannot  let  chicks  hear  too  much  human  voices,  and  cannot  feed  chicks  directly  so  that  chicks  do  not  imprint  on   humans.  Too  much  human  contact  early  in  life  will  disrupt  the  mating  process  as  an  adult.   • How  would  they  migrate  with out  their  parents  to  guide  them?  Led  by  plane.     Ways  animals  affect  the  apples  we  eat?   • Pollination   • Pests  feed  on  apples   • Fertilization   • Seed  dispersal     Fly  learning  &  human  mental  health   • Memory-­‐enhancing  drugs  &  perhaps  treatment  of  mental  retardation  of  humans.   • PBS  Interview  –  Tim  Tully   o Testing  the  memory  skill  of  fruit  fly   o Shock  the  feet  of  flies  &  give  chemical  scent   o See  if  flies  can  recognize  that  the  shock   &  scent  come  together   o See  if  flies  choose  the  normal  tube  or  the  tube  w/  the  chemical  scent   o Cram  together  10  training  sessions  =  doesn’t  form  LTM   o Must  be  a  space  interval  (op
