Period of relative great physical risk new morbidity and mortality. Illegal drug use in adolescence in very common, but declined slightly in recent years. A 2009 survey by health canada indicated that 26% of youth age 15 to 24 used cannabis in the past year, and 6% used a drug other than cannabis. Drug use is higher in this age range than in any other, but is on the decline. Figure from text book: we see periods of declining. Parents did it, so they think its appropriate. So it fits into perception of what adolescent should do. Different attitude, law saying this is okay under certain circumstances, difference in availability to purchase drugs or cigarette or alcohol. Biological and psychological addiction come later: operates with receptors in the brain stop producing the chemical needed due to extra chemical coming in by alcohol or drugs, so if you take it away, then your body needs it.
