PSYCH 3BA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Five Virtues, Intellectual Virtue, The Good Life
Document Summary
Philosophy and religion separate in west, but intertwined in the east, also intertwined with psychology. Fate more in our hands in eastern thought. In western thought, you have to have a relationship with god to be happy. Hedonia: experiencing pleasure is what make life good. The good life is a subject experience, it happens in you because of your experiences. Eudaimonia: good life tied up in our relationship with others and society. Focused on social, want to increase general success of other people. Central statement: our ultimate goal in life is please. Present pleasures should not be deferred for the sake of future pleasures. We should enjoy in the pleasure now. If it feels good do it and do it now (similar to id). Aristippus was not solely talking about sensual pleasure (sex, food), he also talked about intellectual pleasures (art, reading). We should not be controlled by our urges for pleasure.
