Document Summary

In-groups are important to us, and therefore we put more thought into it: out-group homogeneity: see entire out-group as being the same, everyone has same qualities. In-group heterogeneity: no depersonalization, everyone has differences, protects you from the bad group members. Perdue et al (1990): experiment 1: classical conditioning procedure used nonsense syllables (mean nothing in english) and in- group/out-group related words (like us, ours, we, them, theirs, paired the nonsense syllable with out-group/in-group related words, hypothesis. If in-group is a positive thing to you, then you should grow to like the nonsense syllable that is consistently paired with it. If out-group words are negative, then anything paired consistently with it will also be negative. In-group primes will lead to faster reaction times to positive traits and slower reaction times to negative traits; out-group primes will lead to faster reaction times to negative traits and slower reaction to positive traits.
