Psych 3CD3                  Thursday, January 9, 2014 Intergroup Relations Biased Behaviours (Bargh et al., 1996) • IV: Ss exposed to words associated with the elderly category or not o Recruited subjects into the lab and primed some of them with the elderly  stereotype o Scrambled sentence task­ see 5 words, from this, make a 5 word sentence o E.g. “he it hides finds instantly” o E.g. “they her bother see usually” o People who get the elderly type words will have this category primed o How long does it take these subjects to walk from where they were  debriefed to the elevator where they will depart?  Elderly primed walk 1 second slower than those not primed with  the elderly words  Small effect, but statistically significant • Replication with other behaviours o E.g. memory tests  People primed with elderly stereotype do worse on memory tests  These people become more forgetful • Replication with other stereotypes o Reaction to computer failure after subliminal exposure to black vs. white  faces  Exposed to picture of white or black face
