Psych 3CD3    Monday, January 27, 2014 Intergroup Relations Stereotypes as Inaccurate (La Piere, 1936) • Armenian stereotype: o Dishonest o Deceitful o Money­grubbing • DV’s o Survey of the Armenian stereotype (to confirm)  Answer questions to confirm or disconfirm the stereotype o Credit ratings of the Armenian and Caucasian Americans  Tells you how good you are with money, whether you might be  dishonest, whether you pay your bills on time o % Lawsuits involving financial reparation  Armenians perceived as dishonest so they should sue or be sued  often o % Use of charitable foundations  Relevant to the fact that Armenians are money­grubbing Credit Risk Findings • Non­Armenians were more likely to have good credit ratings • Armenians more likely to have fair credit ratings • When combined, no difference between good/fair credit ratings between both  groups Other Findings • % Lawsuits o Americans more likely to be involved in lawsuits • % Use of charity o Whites overused charity and not Armenians • Therefore o Armenian stereotype didn’t match empirical evidence o The stereotype was inaccurate • So… why the stereotype? o Origins  Armenians were new to the country  Since they were new to the country, their credit was not established  Look like Jews= association o Failure to attend to disconfirming evidence   Do not notice the Armenians with good credit ratings o Persistence in the face of disconfirming evidence Stereotypes as Exaggerations: Grains of Truth? Gender Differences in Height • Men are taller than women • Actual difference is not as high as we think; it has been exaggerated • Men are perceived to be 7 inches taller than women • Actual height difference is 4 inches Evidence of Other Exaggerations? • Height ▯not very important • Racial/ethnic/religious (etc.) Stereotypes ▯very important • McCauley & Stitt (1978) o Accuracy of black stereotypes  Recruited a number of subjects (high school, university students,
