In most species, females are slower at reproducing than males. As a consequence, males are out there in the maing pool quicker than females (operaional sex raio) Reproducively capable males and females in any populaion. Sex that invests least that is going to be compeing for the sex that invests most. Not all species have tradiional sex raios (jicamas, pipeish, etc. ) Compeiion for males and for females in aquarium. Females were more aggressive to get access to the opposite sex. How much monopolizaion of the opposite sex (females high, winners wouldn"t let losers near the potenial mate) In this species, females are more compeiive for mates than are males. When traits are favoured because they help in compeiion to get access to opposite sex. Traits are very showy and overt, so no one doubted it was going on. Mate choice is much more subtle to look for. Male elephant seals can weigh about 600 lbs (much bigger than females)
