Reduce the amount of processing our brain has to perform categorizing. Categorized in order to make our perceptual world simpler. Our ability to categorize and our understanding of concepts are all examples of our general knowledge. Allows us to treat perceptually different things as identical. Allows us to break our experience into meaningful chunks, and create an interpretation for it. Categorize our current experience and comparing it to similar experiences in memory, predict our current situation. Our language refer to some type of category or concept, using the category name allows for efficient communication. It is easy, natural, and simple to complete a task or understand a concept when you are an expert at something. Some feature that allow you to identify a new member of the following categories. Struggled with the idea of rules in categorization. The best or most representative member of a category.
