Anecdotal evidence = evidence gathered from others or self-experience. Experiment = scientific tool used to measure effect of one variable on another. Dependant variable = variable being observed by scientist. Kinesiology might study how exercise intensity leads to fitness, independent variable. = intensity of exercise, dependant variable = chosen measure of fitness, such as a lean muscle mass. Experimental group = will receive a manipulation of independent variable. We can then compare the dependant variable of both groups. Participants in both groups should be as similar as possible, if difference in dependent variable found between both groups, likely that our manipulation of the independent variable was the cause. One way to guarantee that experimental and control groups similar as possible, use within-subjects experimental design. Within-subjects design = manipulating independent variable within each participant to minimize effect of external variables on the dependant measure.
