First impressions cant always be trusted with automatic thinking. Stereotypes (cognition) beliefs about attribute that are thought to be characteristic of mem group. Prejudice (affect): a negative attitude or affective response toward certain group and indiv. Perception of world guided by prior experience, biases and heuristics. People can be categorized as in group or out group members (positive vs out group) Categorization allows us to make predictions about group members. Invoking a stereotype can impact performance and decreased interest. Stereotypes bas our categorical judgements and assumptions of new exemplars. Representativeness: what prototype does this person fit? members of particular individual members. Implicit and explicit stereotypes support prejudice and discrimination. Implicit (automatic) processes - occur outside of our awareness without conscious control.
