Symbolic words and gestures are used as representations of specific concept. This allows for communication of abstract and hypothetical concepts as well as ideas, things, etc. that are not present. Language is regular governed by rules and grammar (sentence can be rearranged but still have same meaning) Language is arbitrary the specific sound assigned to represent a concept is arbitrary (has no connection to what it"s describing) Lack of resemblance between word and there meanings. Language is productive this means there are almost limitless ways to combine words to describe objects, situations, and actions.
