Many challenges arise when treating psychological disorders: validity of diagnosis, stigmas related to disorders, choice among treatment options. 5 stages of grief universal path for dealing with death: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. No hard data that everyone goes through these stages little predictive value. Perspectives in psychology change the focus of research questions we pursue and thee type of answers we find. Strong unconscious conflicts within the mind are driving tensions and problems that people experience on daily basis. Treatment focuses on stress management for coping with these symptoms. Mind separated into id (primal drives, instant rewards), superego (moral upbringing), and ego (mediator between id and superego) Therapy = patient talking to therapist trying to talk through problems. Underlying theory cannot be disproved: behaviourist. Disorders are the external overt behaviours themselves observable behaviour is the actual problem. Focusing only on behaviour not deeper mechanisms. Disorders result from maladaptive selection and interpretation of stimuli from the environment.
