Learn whats right and wrong through experience. Superego is developed at end of phallic stage understand morality of same sex parent by age 5 internalized cultural ideas of what is right and wrong. Two components: conscience: we don"t lie, we don"t hit what we don"t do. If we don"t listen to it, we are punished with guilt. ex: hit brother, feel guilty after: ego ideal; list of things good people do listen to parents, rules. Shame: sense of not living up to your own moral ethics, not something you can point to but just feel like blah ex: steal chocolate bar, feel shame about it after because wrong decision. Psychodynamic approach; took away id and superego and stopped focusing on things like sex and unconscious motivations, but still believes relationship with parents very important with development just like freud did. Moral behaviours are the result of conditioning experiences.
