Children have various experiences in the environment and they draw their own conclusions from these experiences and the knowledge they have. But, when they counter novel objects/situations they don"t have much available to them to interpret these things with and so sometimes their interpretations seem unusual. Children want to understand the world around them and they are uncomfortable if what they know doesn"t match the world around them: maturationist he believed that cognitive development occurred in a stage-like manner (mostly discontinuous) At certain stages in children"s lives, they would have a massive reorganization of how they understood the world around them.
