Document Summary

Perception interpretation of info received by sense organs. Nature/nurture: sensation/perception is a key battleground for nativism/empiricism. Nativism inborn skills and abilities (e. g. mother recognition) Empiricism inborn skills developed over time: there are still environmental roles in the womb, we cannot all be born knowing what mother looks like. But we have exposure to mother"s voice and insides. Methods and results can not involve words. Habituation/dishabituation technique: present stimuli till baby gets bored, then present slightly different stimuli, if new interest arises with novel stimulus, then he/she can recognise difference. Operant conditioning technique: rewards associated with behaviours, e. g. play the musical note b, and reward when baby turns its head. Acuity how sharp or keen the sense is. Different senses are more developed at birth: e. g. hearing is more developed than sight. Environmental stimulus is present for hearing prenatally: taste and smell are also developed prenatally.
