Same as manic episode, with one criterion missing. No marked impairment in social or occupational functioning, or hospitalization to prevent harm to self or other, or psychotic features. Cocaine addiction has similar symptoms to bipolar disorder. Majority of drug addicts have comorbid mental disorders. Age of onset 20-30s; mean late 30s. Age of onset late teens 20s. No race bias, slightly higher in higher ses. Canadian annual prevalence of depressive & bipolar disorders: Depression becomes reaction to any lost love object. Global reasons: something very big and important about me . Depression = low levels of amine neurotransmitter activity. Mania = high levels of amine neurotransmitter activity. Antidepressants and ect: reduce b-adrenergic receptors; increase serotonergic response, a-adrenergic receptors (relaxation, inhibition) Lithium: stabilizes serotonergic activity (mechanism of action unclear) May lead to hypomania in bipolar disorder. Not lower in csf of depressed patients. Metabolite: mhpg (3 methoxy, 4 hydroxy phenyl glycol) Lower levels of urinary mhpg in depression than controls.
