Cocaine addiction has similar symptoms to bipolar disorder. Majority of drug addicts have comorbid mental disorders. Age of onset 20-30s; mean late 30s. Age of onset late teens 20s. Global reasons: something very big and important about me . Depression = low levels of amine neurotransmitter activity. Mania = high levels of amine neurotransmitter activity. Antidepressants and ect: reduce b-adrenergic receptors; increase serotonergic response, a-adrenergic receptors (relaxation, inhibition) Lithium: stabilizes serotonergic activity (mechanism of action unclear) May lead to hypomania in bipolar disorder. Not lower in csf of depressed patients. Metabolite: mhpg (3 methoxy, 4 hydroxy phenyl glycol) Lower levels of urinary mhpg in depression than controls.
