Serotonin levels in brain cannot be measured directly. Peripheral measures of serotonin; 5 hiaa may be from outside the brain. Drugs that block serotonin reuptake do not relieve depression. Reserpine, reduces serotonin, and may be an antidepressant. Reducing tryptophan (and serotonin) does not cause depression. Neonatal exposure to ssri"s causes adult depression in rats. Down regulating 5 htt transporter increases serotonin, and depression in rats. Perhaps smaller volume in some areas of hippocampus? (true in multiple sclerosis cases with depression) Increased frontal asymmetry: less left frontal eeg activity associated with reduced positive emotions (reduced right reported in adhd) Unipolar and bipolar depression associated with high cortisol levels. Starts earlier in depression (before 4am noon) Affects appetite, motor activity, sleep, pain perception. Concordance rates in 1st degree relatives range from 6 40% Mz concordance raters higher than dz rates. Higher for bipolar than for unipolar depression. Omega 3 acids: good as antidepressants when no comorbid anxiety.
