Looking at a number of levels of analysis to try to find the causes of analysis. In the presence of a stressor, the hypothalamus is stimulated to produce a hormone called. Crh (corticotrophin releasing hormone: this hormone triggers the release of corticotrophins, cortico = cortex, tropin = moving towards / being drawn towards, aka releases things that head towards the cortex of something head towards the adrenocorticotropin. Anxiety = a form of stress response. Evidence finds hpa function is altered in anxiety (and depression ) more active. People look if hpa activity may be related to anxiety: antidepressants suppress hpa activity. If we look at the stress response in young stressed macaques, they show anxiety and depression like symptoms as adults plus changes in hpa (hyper-reactivity) Several different neurotransmitters have been targeted in the search for understanding the neurochemical bases for anxiety. Also see increased levels of epinephrine and the reduced inhibitory gaba.
