Document Summary

Freud"s theory was the first modern theory. Borrowed a lot of information form others to develop his own theories (his information was limited) borrowed a lot from biology, thermodynamics, etc. Freud studied neuroscience; studied/researched neurological development; became a neurologist. A lot of the time when a physician couldn"t pin-point the problem, they"d assume its a nerve issue and refer them to a neurologist these were not considered to be psychological disorders but nerve disorders (1880s) Anything from paralysis to tingling was considered to be a nerve issue ( nervous breakdown ) so freud would try to cure the patients by massage therapy/spa treatments/etc. Sometimes these treatments would help because it would calm people down. Another treatment was to apply electrical energy to the area of the body that was not functioning or functioning properly, to get the nerves to work again. Helped to discover that many problems were psychological/memory problems not nerves.
