Born in 1875, in switzerland, village called kesswil, outside city of bern. Father wasn"t making as much money as wife wanted. Jung had crisis, deeply broken by end of friendship. Came up with hypothesis, core of his theory. Instinctive modes of behaviour, instinctive way of thinking. Instinctive ways of interpreting world around us, behaviour of others,etc. Archetypes for everything humans have experienced over their life times. Use them to overcome obstacles and achieve a goal ex. archetypes of heres, wise old man, (yoda, dumbledore) Looking for common themes, common stories, in all things all over the world. Want to express our archetypes, use them in every day things. Like a cookie cutter, use for many things but shape will be the same. He argues we are little by little creating new archetypes. Contents are based on each individuals personal experiences. There are ideas, emotions, memories, images from everything we experience.
