Prejudice: negative attitude or reaction towards a person based solely on their membership in a group. Any of these 3 can be the starting point to the other 2. Competition is based on material goods: realistic group conflict theory (sheriff, very rational. Tajfel believed you can have competition over something that is intangible: self esteem, social identity theory. Prejudice arises as a result of cognitive processes that lead us to stereotype outgroups. Lord of the flies: jack/ralph groups hated each other because jack and ralph hated each other. Competition over material goods leads to: stereotyping, hostility towards outgroup, harassment of the outgroup, enhanced loyalty to the in-group.
