Document Summary

Dissonance theory is about the relationship between attitudes and behaviours. We used to use attributes to predict behavior. Say that in order to know/predict the relationship between attitude and behaviour, you have to ask people about their intentions. Even then, you have to factor in the influences of their intentions. Believed the end of the world was coming (in the form of a flood) Cult believed they would be saved by aliens. Instead of forgetting it happened and quitting the cult, they decided that they saved the world by being in the cult and preventing the flood. I joined a cult in order to escape from great flood, etc. Dissonance arises as a result of psychological inconsistency. Behaviour at odds with attitudes or self-concept. Creates a drive state that motivates us to do anything we can do get rid of it. Two methods of dissonance reduction: attitude change (automatic) create consistency (make yourself believe attitudes and behaviours do match)
