PSYCH 2C03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Fundamental Attribution Error, Fidel Castro, Dispositional Attribution
Document Summary
Encompasses a lot of different theories and hypothesis about explaining others" behaviours. Attribution: fancy word for explaining why something happened. Used to help us understand what is happening in the world around us, considered adaptive, since. Attributional heuristic: rules of thumbs that help us very quickly decide what people are thinking, feeling, etc These help us make quick decisions to know if we want to be around them or not: help us understand others" behaviours, our own behaviours and even our own emotions. Heuristic tendency to over focus on people"s dispositions (who they are) while ignoring situational factors. Also called the correspondence bias (behavioural economists call it this). We believe other"s behaviours correspond to their dispositions or personalities. Missing opportunities yourself to make wise decisions or miss friendships. Interpreting milgram"s obedient subjects: people assume that in milgram"s experiment that the people who obeyed are actually bad people, and then everyone would think that they would not behave the same way.
