PSYCH 2C03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Amygdala, Pole And Polar, Homicide
Document Summary
Hostile aggression: an act of aggression stemming from feelings of anger and aimed at inflicting pain or injury. Instrumental aggression: aggression as a means to some goal other than causing pain. (i. e. during a football game) Males are theorized to aggress for two reasons: establish dominance over other males and ensure that their mates are not copulating with others. Supported by crime statistics, which shows that males are most likely to engage in violence during their peak reproductive years. Aggressive behaviour can be modified: a cat raised with a rat will refrain from attacking the rat or other rats (normally, cats instinctively stalk and kill rats) Aggressive behaviour does not need to be learned: rats in isolation (no experience in fighting fellow rats) will attack fellow rats, but using the same pattern of threat and attack that experienced rats use. Chimpanzees, 98% similar in dna, is known for the aggressive behaviour of its males.
